Mayor of Islington Visits KMEWO to Show Support for Women’s Services

The newly appointed Mayor of Islington, Councillor Jason Jackson, recently visited the premises of the Kurdish and Middle Eastern Women’s Organisation (KMEWO) following an invitation from our team.
During his two-hour visit, the Mayor learned more about KMEWO’s work over the past 26 years in supporting Kurdish, Middle Eastern, and North African women who are survivors of domestic abuse and harmful practices. The meeting provided an opportunity to highlight the trusted relationship we have built with Islington Council over the years, as well as the growing challenges facing the women’s sector.
KMEWO staff and trustees discussed key issues affecting frontline services, including structural racism, the ongoing funding crisis, and the rising cost of living, all of which impact our ability to meet the needs of the most vulnerable women in our community. We emphasised the urgent need for sustainable funding and stronger policy responses to ensure essential services remain accessible and effective.
The Mayor met with KMEWO’s staff team, learning about their daily efforts to support women through advice, advocacy, mental health services, education and employability as well as community outreach. Recognising our long-standing contribution to the borough, he committed to continuing his support our cause.
We are grateful for the Mayor’s visit and his recognition of the crucial work being done by KMEWO and other organisations in the women’s sector. His engagement reinforces the importance of collaboration between local authorities and grassroots organisations to address the complex challenges facing women from diverse backgrounds.
