Every year,\u202f<\/span>International Women\u2019s Day<\/span><\/b>\u202foffers an opportunity not only to celebrate the achievements of women and girls but also to reflect on the work that still lies ahead.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite decades of progress, no country in the world has yet achieved full legal equality for women and girls. Legal frameworks are\u00a0essential,\u00a0but justice cannot exist in isolation from resources. Support services such as safe accommodation, counselling, legal\u00a0aid, specialist\u00a0organisations\u00a0and community outreach programmes are critical to ensuring women\u2019s safety and recovery\u00a0yet many\u00a0remain\u00a0chronically underfunded.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the United Kingdom, the government has committed to tackling violence against women and girls and has set an ambitious target to halve violence within a decade. While increased funding has been announced, many frontline organisations continue to face short-term and fragmented commissioning. Specialist services, including community-based organisations, are often\u00a0operating\u00a0under\u00a0high\u00a0pressure as demand\u00a0and case complexity\u00a0continue\u00a0to grow.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Globally, the situation is concerning\u00a0too. In some contexts, hard-won rights are being challenged or rolled back. In Iraq, proposed amendments to\u00a01959 Personal Status Law\u00a0have raised serious concerns among human rights organisations about the protection of women and girls, as its provisions\u00a0effectively allow child marriages giving extensive authority\u00a0to\u00a0clerical courts. In Afghanistan, women and girls continue to face severe restrictions on education,\u00a0employment\u00a0and public life. In Iran, women have been at the forefront of movements calling for dignity and fundamental freedoms despite facing significant risks.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the same time, violence against women and girls\u00a0remains\u00a0widely under-reported across the world. Survivors often face stigma, fear and systemic barriers when seeking justice, while emerging forms of violence,\u00a0such as\u00a0online abuse, are increasingly affecting women and girls but remain insufficiently addressed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Women\u2019s organisations and frontline services continue to play a vital role in responding to these challenges. This\u202f<\/span>International Women\u2019s Day<\/span><\/b>, the message is clear: commitments must translate into action.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
