The newly appointed Mayor of Islington, Councillor Jason Jackson<\/strong>, recently visited the premises of the Kurdish and Middle Eastern Women\u2019s Organisation (KMEWO)<\/strong> following an invitation from our team.<\/p>\n

During his two-hour visit<\/strong>, the Mayor learned more about KMEWO\u2019s work over the past 26 years<\/strong> in supporting Kurdish, Middle Eastern, and North African women<\/strong> who are survivors of domestic abuse and harmful practices<\/strong>. The meeting provided an opportunity to highlight the trusted relationship we have built with Islington Council <\/strong>over the years, as well as the growing challenges<\/strong> facing the women\u2019s sector.<\/p>\n

KMEWO staff and trustees discussed key issues affecting frontline services, including structural racism, the ongoing funding crisis, and the rising cost of living, <\/strong>all of which impact our ability to meet the needs of the most vulnerable women in our community. We emphasised the urgent need for sustainable funding and stronger policy responses<\/strong> to ensure essential services remain accessible and effective.<\/p>\n

The Mayor met with KMEWO\u2019s staff team, learning about their daily efforts to support women through advice, advocacy, mental health services, education and employability as well as community outreach<\/strong>. Recognising our long-standing contribution to the borough, he committed to continuing his support our cause.<\/p>\n

We are grateful for the Mayor\u2019s visit and his recognition of the crucial work being done by KMEWO and other organisations in the women\u2019s sector. His engagement reinforces the importance of collaboration between local authorities and grassroots organisations<\/strong> to address the complex challenges facing women from diverse backgrounds.<\/p>\n
