JEREMY CORBYN AT KMEWO’s OFFICES

“KMEWO’s good reputation is a result of hard work and commitment the last 23 years” Jeremy Corbyn, MP of Islington North

On Thursday the 2nd of February 2023, Jeremy Corbyn, MP of Islington North, paid a visit at KMEWO’s renovated offices.

Sitting together with KMEWO’s Director, Sawsan Salim, Deputy Director, Gona Saed and  the staff, the MP of Islington had a deep discussion about the work of the organisation the last 23 years and its holistic services in supporting black and minoritised women, survivors of Domestic Abuse and other harmful practices, towards a journey to safetyrecovery and rebuild. Our frontline staff had the opportunity to talk about the achievements as well as the difficulties KMEWO has faced throughout the years and how the organisation’s leadership team and frontline workers surpass them.

The discussion extended to the challenges VAWG sector faces, particularly when women are unable to speak about what they go through due to personalsocial as well as cultural restrictions and what the role of VAWG organisations and other agencies is in addressing them and providing viable solutions.

The impact of the pandemics in the rise of Domestic Abuse and the national restrictions imposed by governments led to an alarming situation putting many women in danger. Similarly, and in the aftermath of Covid-19,  the cost-of-living crisis is now well established in the UK challenging women, who are unable to escape abusive relationships, as they are financially dependent on their partners. Women from Black and minoritised communities experience that at a greater extent due to culrural and religious factors.

Jeremy Corbyn showed a genuine interest expressing his concerns and committing himself to bring these issues to light.

ENDS.
