Director at KMEWO, Sawsan Salim To Receive the Mayor's Civic Award

On Thursday, 21st of March 2024, Islington awarded eight unsung heroes for their ongoing contribution to the borough in a ceremony at Islington Town Hall. The ceremony was presented by Cllr Gary Heather, Mayor of Islington.

KMEWO’s director, Sawsan Salim received one of the Mayor’s Civic Awards for her 25 year contribution in the borough supporting Black and Minoritised women, survivors of Domestic Abuse and Harmful Practices.

Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, Sawsan was not able to be present on the day and the award was received by Sazan Salih, Operations and VAWG services Manager at KMEWO.

Sawsan in her Own Words:

‘I feel very content and honoured for being one of the 8 ”unsung heroes’ in Islington to receive the Mayor’s Civic Award in Islington. This award reflects all the hard work done in Islington and London-wide the last 25 years by the Kurdish and Middle Eastern Women’s Organisation. It reflects the reputation we have built in the borough through our hard work in supporting Black and Minoritised women, survivors of Domestic Abuse and Harmful Practices with our holistic and specialist services. This is definitely a team work, so I would like to dedicate this to KMEWO’s team, our funders and partners who all together made this a reality. Last but not least, I would like to dedicate the Mayor’s Civic Award to the women who approached us and trusted us and they keep trusting us returning to the organisation for different services.”

Congratulations Sawsan! We are all very proud of you!
