Afghan Refugee Families in Islington- Integrative Activities

In 2022, as part of a resettlement programme led by Islington Council, KMEWO provided extensive support to newly arrived Afghan refugees. A dedicated member of staff spent 5 days a week at the Bridging Hotel where they were being accommodated, providing welfare benefits support and navigational assistance. We liaised with multiple agencies to identify safeguarding concerns and escalate urgent health, education and other enquiries to relevant members of the MDT team. We also provide integrated tailored advice and advocacy, ongoing emotional and trauma informed support.

One year after the successful resettlement of Afghan refugee families in Islington, the resettlement programme has been transformed into integrative activities which aim to provide tailored advice and advocacy, ongoing emotional and trauma informed support, travel training, welfare benefits support, multi-agency navigation and liaison, identification of safeguarding concerns, escalation of urgent health, education and other enquiries to relevant members of the MDT team, as well as a wide range of support for all families.

STARS (ستاره ها) Women’s Social Group

Funded by Islington Council, Women Social Group Stars is a weekly social event for Afghan women settled in Islington. It provides a space for the women to come together, socialise, learn and share in order to reduce the level of stress that most of them are going through. Sessions include games to improve English language skills, support with WhatsApp messaging and calls, laptop use, checking and sending emails, and workshops on harassment and stalking, wellbeing sessions offered by an accredited counsellor, domestic abuse and safety awareness. KMEWO also organises visits to other London boroughs where Afghan women can see different London neighbourhoods and venues, navigate public transport and relax by spending time with their peers.
