Ms R came to the UK on a spousal visa to join her husband, but sought help from the BRS as her husband had began to abuse her. The BRS referred Ms R to KMEWO as her visa was due to expire in about 14 day’s time and her husband was refusing to apply for a renewal.
During an initial assessment at KMEWO, Ms R was asked to disclose as much as possible about the abuse she had experienced, including details about particular attacks. She told us that she was regularly raped, physically attacked and financially controlled so that she was unable to see to her basic personal needs. We advised her to go to the police and make a statement about what had happened, and to call the police if she was attacked in the future.
We then contacted a solicitor on her behalf to deal with the visa issue and to make an appointment for her to meet them.
The solicitor agreed to take up the case and subsequently won indefinite leave to remain. During that time we continue to help her with benefit claims and housing, and she is now gradually becoming integrated into her local community.
