A Sad Farewell to a True Veteran: Dr. Nawal El Saadawi (1931-2021)

Losing this huge personality and this brave voice is deeply saddening. But Nawal Saadawi, both in her works and in her writings, has left an unrivalled legacy for women and people who want freedom and equality. The memory of  Dr. Nawal El Saadawi is alive forever.

The pioneering, self-dubbed ‘Historical Socialist Feminist’ is widely recognised as the Arab world’s leading and most outspoken feminist.

Dr. Nawal El Saadawi wrote over 50 books, spanning many feminist topics and provoking revolutionary discussions on gender in the region including; male domination, veil wearing and FGM (a practice she had herself experienced at the age of 6 years)

Dr. Nawal El Saadawi was Born in Egypt as one of 8 children. Her views on patriarchy were formed at an early age, when she saw that preferential treatment was often awarded to her brothers simply because they were boys.

Her lifetime work in campaigning against the inequalities faced by women earned her multiple prizes and accolades around the globe. However, this same fearless campaigning, writing and activism lead to her being banned from speaking in the Egyptian media and imprisoned for her outspoken views.

A Medical Doctor, novelist, activist, campaigner, and outspoken political critic, Dr. Nawal El Saadawi, we thank You for paving the way.  May we all continue your fight for equality for women all over the world while you REST IN PERFECT PEACE.
